Our Rich History
Since 1858, Grace Episcopal Church has stood as a beacon of faith, compassion, and architectural beauty in the heart of downtown Madison. Nestled at the corner of West Washington Avenue and Carroll Street, Grace is more than a church—it’s a living monument to community, service, and spiritual growth.
Through war and peace, depression and renewal, Grace has welcomed generations of worshippers, hosted countless baptisms, weddings, and funerals, and extended care to our city’s most vulnerable people. Its Gothic Revival architecture, stained glass windows, and soaring steeple are woven into Madison’s civic and spiritual identity fabric.
Grace, recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, is a City of Madison landmark and a sacred space belonging to the worshippers and the entire community.
As we restore our iconic slate roof, we honor the legacy of those who built and preserved this sanctuary and our shared commitment to protecting it for generations.
The Project
Grace’s original slate roof has been replaced twice over 167 years. But time, weather, and age have taken their toll on the current roof—and now is the moment to act. The Enduring Sanctuary project is our commitment to restoring and replacing the current slate roof with historically appropriate materials to preserve our sacred space for generations.
We’re working with Bachmann Construction as a general contractor, Kulp’s of Stratford as the slate subcontractor, and Fred Groth, a Grace parishioner and principal at GRAEF, as the project manager. Architect Dan Maki of Facilities Engineering is overseeing technical aspects. Work began in May 2025 and is expected to continue through the end of the year.

💡 Historic Tax Credit Award
In May 2025, Grace’s application to the Wisconsin Historical Society was approved, making the project eligible for tax credits. Though the church is tax-exempt, we can sell these credits to a third party. We conservatively expect to realize $160,000 or more, significantly supporting the total project cost.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
