About the Campaign
Our Rich History
Since 1858, Grace Episcopal Church has stood as a beacon of faith, compassion, and architectural beauty in the heart of downtown Madison. Nestled at the corner of West Washington Avenue and Carroll Street, Grace is more than a church—it’s a living monument to community, service, and spiritual growth.
Through war and peace, depression and renewal, Grace has welcomed generations of worshippers, hosted countless baptisms, weddings, and funerals, and extended care to our city’s most vulnerable people. Its Gothic Revival architecture, stained glass windows, and soaring steeple are woven into Madison’s civic and spiritual identity fabric.
Grace, recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, is a City of Madison landmark and a sacred space belonging to the worshippers and the entire community.
As we restore our iconic slate roof, we honor the legacy of those who built and preserved this sanctuary and our shared commitment to protecting it for generations.
Why replace the roof?
Grace’s slate roof has been a defining architectural feature protecting our sacred space since 1858. But time and weather have taken their toll on the current slate roof.
Cracked and missing slate tiles, worn flashing, and failing underlayment now threaten not only the roof itself—but also the priceless interior, stained glass windows, and structure beneath.
Replacing the roof is no longer optional. It is a necessary preservation act that will protect Grace’s ministry, beauty, and legacy for the next 80 to 100 years.
This project ensures that future generations will worship, gather, and serve under the same historic roofline that has defined our skyline and spirit since 1858.

What's at risk if we delay?
Delaying the roof replacement puts Grace Church at serious and growing risk. Water infiltration threatens our historic structure as the slate roof deteriorates, from plaster walls and centuries-old wood trusses to treasured stained glass windows and sacred spaces. Even temporary leaks can cause lasting damage to the building’s fabric and to the worship, music, and community life that happen within it.
Increased construction costs, potential additional structural repairs, and further water intrusion could turn a preventable project into a crisis. Acting now means preserving the integrity of our church, not just as a building, but as a living expression of faith and community in the heart of Madison.
